A Forum For Madison's Finer Felons...

2/03/2005

Ahh, I love the smell of aerosol at midnight...

Alright gals and gents; chic chicks and cool cats; punkers, pranksters, and posers; taggers and taggees, it begins!
This blog is to serve as a forum for the growing underground movement that is art crime in Madison, WI. Post ideas, tout your work, talk shit, weep for the poor private property, swap tactics, inform, organize, or do whatever! In addition I am going to do my best to photo-document Madison art graffiti as much as possible (any and all submissions are welcome) so that it can be admired/ridiculed/etc. I am going to focus primarily on stencil graffiti, but I will let this blog develop as the art does. Two reason for singling out stencil graff: 1) unlike "tagging", the work tends to be more premeditated and concerned with both aesthetics and message.* 2) one year ago there was little, if any, stencil work to be found in Madison, but since this summer, shazam!
There is change in the air and this forum is here to give it voice!

*a word to the taggers: I'm not trying to start a war here, there are truly amazing tagging works out there and they are all the more amazing for having been painstakingly hand done and out of sight of the popo's. However, they are usually in hard to reach/edge of town areas for the same reason. Also, there are far too many egoists who are running around scrawling their names on things without creating art. Art isn't about fame, it's the love baby, the love!

aight....

i have a few things to say about this site...

one: you are blowing up stencil art in a bad way. its cool for people to know about it...but for fucks sake dont give away locations. this is what gets spots staked out...i will not be surprised if the isthmus has a few stakeouts this summer because of the blatent interest in stencil art...so please, for other peoples sake, dont post addresses. and dont fucking post up stencils that advertise this shit....

Two: You obviously are new to this. my advice, keep this shit chill. i can tell you've got alot of passion for this...but dont make it fashion...this is for the big boys and girls.

Three: you better watch you fuckin mouth about what is and isnt art. Granted madison has its fair share of toys....infact, about 70% or more are toys. Tags, are a part of graffiti. Throws are apart of graffiti. you need to realize this if you dont...it is about fame for some people and not art. the art is the act of doing it. and i can safely tell you most of the stencils on this blog, i would not consider art...i would consider them fashion. to me alot of this shit is regurgitated nonsense.

Four: DONT FUCKING ADVERTISE YOUR SITE IN PUBLIC YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!!
Do you want to get busted? your going to when you do that shit.
wake the fuck up toy. You are nothing until someone tells you otherwise. you cant decide that.

other than all that...get the fuck up and destroy shit. dont sit and talk about it...do it.

i promise you this, if people start getting busted over this site, i will personally lead a team of heads to your front door so i can personally kick you in the face....

thanx.

dear anonymous hater-

one: i am only including locations to try to get people to actually go out and appreciate this shit. as far as "giving away" locations and "stakeouts", that is ridiculous, the whole city is one big canvas, with plenty of nooks and crannies begging to be adorned. also, anyone sticking their neck out to paint it is a fool if they aren't already watching over their shoulder while they do it.

two: i'm not as new to this as you seem to think, i've been documenting graffiti (not madison's) for the past three years.

three: this stuff is art. whether it is any good or not is up for debate (thats what the comment space is for). of course throws are a part of graffiti, an infinitely larger part in fact, but i am choosing to single out a different part. i'm trying to examine graffiti that is more concerned with visual content. people looking for fame can do it on their own time.

four: I CAN AND WILL ADVERTISE IN PUBLIC. how else will people know? besides, the art is already public, i'm just trying to provide space for dicussion, analysis, critic, and documentation that is already afforded art in private arenas. I'm trying to bring covert art into the light of day WITHOUT compromising the artists' identities. Furthermore, I am keeping myself and this site completely legitimate, so I am not concerned about being "busted". I am trying to focus on the paint here and I would never put anything out here that might get people in trouble.
as far as fucking up and destroying shit, that's not what this site is about, sorry. i'll admit society could use a few good whacks with the wrecking ball, but this site is about building sucka. take the hate elsewhere.

five: making numbered statements and using CAPITAL LETTERS doesn't make your arguement more impressive, neither does posting twice...

I would like my say on some of this. Only beef i really have, because i am not a passionate individual when it comes to this, is that this person says you better watch your mouth about what is and isnt art. Because obviously he knows and you don't. An object is not art because one person decides it is. Art is not objects, it is a philosophy and idea. To decide what is and isn't art is to be dictatorial. Further emphasized by the whole kick your face in crack. The reason humanity will prosper is because of the arts.
also as a side note, I see nothing illegal on this site that the author has done. To say he is going to get busted makes no sense. This whole comment was a lot of regurgitated nonsense by some person who considers themselves to have a definitive knowledge on the subject. Self proclaimed supremecy without posting a name or way to contact and discuss is another thing i don't understand. But oh well to me its all just kids throwing shit on other peoples shit.

Anybody seen the 50 foot billboard showing WIBA AM right wing hate monger Vicki McKenna with an American flag draped over her shoulders? It's at Verona and the Beltline, just off the south frontage. I think McKenna asked for that location so she could see it from her barstool at Le Tigre Lounge.

I'm not one of you guys, but it seems to me that this billboard ought to inspire something especially creative.

Personally, I view stencils as a lame cop out to real skill, but I still respect that people do different things as art. I do have to say that I enjoy stencils' (generally political) statements and how cynical they are. Honestly, though, flooding an area with stencils is pretty toy-ish... I'm a graf writer, so maybe you can understand where I'm coming from. I think it would be nice to have a section on this site for non-toy Mad area grafs from decent crews (RFA, TYC, and some of the older IPC shit still around.) I think it would be excellent to represent graf writers in addition to stencilers. The only problem I would have, though, is if some asshole threw up a stencil over a nice piece, but I have yet to see that. Overall, though, good site.

you people suck... I'd love to tag your house, your clothes, your personal property. How do you justify destroying other people's property? Would you like your car tagged with whatever I think is cute.

By the way, I assume that rfa stands for "real fucking asshole."
